Chief Jack Moody takes the Oath of Office with wife, son and mother by his side.

On January 1, 2025, Jack H. Moody, Jr., was sworn in as Chief Public Defender for District 20 at the Robeson County Courthouse by the Honorable Senior Resident Superior Court Judge J. Gregory Bell.

Standing with him were his wife, Alicia Greene Moody, his son, Alexander “Xan” Moody, and his mother, Alice Faye Moody.

In 1987, Chief Moody earned his undergraduate degree in political science and criminal justice from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He went on to earn his J.D. from the Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University.

Chief Moody began his legal career at Huggins and Rogers in Lumberton.  In February 1992, he joined the Robeson County Public Defender Office as an assistant public defender, gaining experience in district and superior courts including superior court trials in Robeson County. He spent the past 32 years there, representing and assisting thousands of clients with their unique legal issues.

Chief Moody previously worked in the private sector with his father, Jack Moody, Sr., at Lindsey Campbell Oil Company, and he was part-owner of C.J.M. Ventures, a motorsports’ dealership in Lumberton, for approximately 17 years.

He has served many civic organizations, including the Fairmont Civitan Club, the Robeson County Shrine Club, and the St. Alban’s Masonic Lodge.  He and his family are life-long members of Trinity Methodist Church in Fairmont. And Chief Moody has previously served as Secretary on the Robeson County Board of Elections. In his spare time, he works to help expand and grow the sport of wrestling for high school students in the local and surrounding areas. His son, Xan, participates and competes locally and at the state and national levels.

Chief Moody said, “I have devoted my life to this office, its mission, and its lasting legacy of providing excellent, zealous and effective legal services to each client, and I am excited to lead this amazing team of attorneys, investigators, and support staff that are likewise dedicated to the work of Indigent Defense.”
