Congratulations are in order for Glenn Gerding. At the August 22, 2025, quarterly meeting of the IDS Commission, he was reappointed to the position of State Appellate Defender for a new four-year term by a unanimous vote.
IDS Commission Chair Bryan Jones said, “As Chair and on behalf of the IDS Commission, we congratulate Mr. Gerding on his reappointment as Appellate Defender. His proven leadership, deep expertise and commitment to justice give us full confidence in his continued success in this vital role.”
Prior to his first appointment as Appellate Defender ten years ago, Gerding spent most of his career handling appeals. Since 2015, he has managed an office and a roster of attorneys who handle appeals from courtrooms across North Carolina.
Gerding said, “I would like to thank the IDS Commission for their support of the Office of the Appellate Defender and for reappointing me as the Appellate Defender. I appreciate the opportunity to continue leading the outstanding attorneys and support staff at the Office of the Appellate Defender as we fulfill our mission to provide zealous representation in the appellate courts.”
IDS would like to thank Mr. Gerding for ensuring that indigent defendants can continue to exercise their constitutional right to appeal.
