The Office of Indigent Defense Services is pleased to announce Sonia Colon has joined the IDS team to serve as the Budget Manager. Her first day was April 25, 2024.
Sonia will direct and execute the maintenance of the IDS budget, direct budget realignment for state appropriations and other department sources and analyze financial data to advise stakeholders. Her analysis will include examining financial trends, historical data and actual and expected obligations to advise the executive director and the IDS Commission.
Sonia comes to IDS with 14 years of experience working with federal and state funds in the accounting and budget field, along with more than 10 years of experience as an auditor in a Certified Public Accounting (CPA) firm in Puerto Rico.
Originally from San Juan, she earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras (Main) Campus.
Prior to joining the IDS team, she worked for the Department of Environmental Quality for 3 years as Budget Analyst II, working in budget development and execution, including the quarterly allocation of state funds. In addition, she served for five years as Budget Analyst II for the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. There, she managed close to $300 Million in state and federal funds, providing budget and account support as well as appropriating funds to more than 100 Local Education Agencies (LEAs) statewide.
Sonia’s prior work in Puerto Rico, and her husband’s prior work there called for frequent travel to the United States and to Raleigh, specifically. They fell in love with the people and the area. And when her husband retired, they relocated to North Carolina to provide a better quality of life for them and their two daughters.
