2023 NC Appellate Advocacy Training

Registration is open for the 2023 North Carolina Appellate Advocacy Training, cosponsored by the School of Government and the Office of Indigent Defense Services.

PARTICIPANTS:
The Appellate Advocacy Training is open to assistant appellate defenders and attorneys on the appellate appointment list maintained by the Office of the Appellate Defender. Any questions about eligibility to Glenn Gerding at (919) 354-7210 or [email protected].

**REQUIREMENTS: To prepare for the program, please read the Guide for Participants, which is posted on the course webpage under the “Materials” tab.

At the end of the guide, there is a form to fill out summarizing the case you will work on at the program.  Every registrant must complete and return the form via email to Bob Burke, [email protected], no later than noon on Wednesday, October 11, 2023.  If you have questions about the case you should bring, contact Appellate Defender Glenn Gerding.

You will be doing some writing during the workshops. Plan to bring a laptop or other electronic writing device.

LOCATION, DATE, & TIME:
The training will be held Wednesday, October 25, through Friday, October 27, 2023, at the School of Government in Chapel Hill. Check-in for the course will begin at 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday, October 25, and the course will adjourn at 3:15 p.m. on Friday, October 27. Lunch is available in the building on each day of the program.

REGISTRATION:
To apply for this course, view the agenda, and find other program information, visit the course webpage. Space is limited, and pre-registration is required. Applicants will receive notification  if they are  accepted into the course. The application deadline for this course is Friday, October 6, 2023.

Please apply on the course webpage under the ‘Register’ tab and follow the instructions as you register, particularly if this is your first time using our online registration system. (Note that our system requires one unique email address per profile created, so each person from your office who plans to attend must register separately using an individual email address. As we correspond with participants primarily through email, please ensure your email address is current.)

FEE:
The registration fee for this three-day course is $465, which includes materials, CLE credits,  lunch, and snacks . There is no fee for assistant appellate defenders in the Office of the Appellate Defender.

A limited number of scholarships are available. If you are interested in applying, click here to complete the scholarship application. You must apply and receive approval for a scholarship before registering. Please apply as soon as possible. Scholarships are awarded no later than two weeks after application submission. The scholarship application deadline is Friday, September 22.  If you receive a scholarship, the registration fee is waived. You are still responsible for your travel, food, and lodging expenses.

CREDIT & CERTIFICATION:
We have applied for 17.50 hours of general continuing legal education (CLE) credit.
