IDS is pleased to announce that Daniel Meier will join the IDS team as the new regional defender on May 1, 2026.
Daniel comes to IDS from his law firm, Meier Law Group PLLC, a general practice, which he has led for the last 21 years. Early in his law career, he did civil litigation work, but for the last decade or so, he focused primarily on criminal defense. Prior to starting his own firm, he worked for a small firm in Raleigh for a year, and with pre-paid legal services for a year.
Before settling in North Carolina in 1999, Mr. Meier was an assistant administrator with Columbia/Hospital Corporation of America in Arlington, TX, and San Antonio, TX. He left healthcare for law in 1999 and earned his J.D. from the UNC School of Law in 2002. Mr. Meier also holds a BBA in Finance from the University of Notre Dame and both an MBA and MSHA from the University of Alabama in Birmingham.
While running his law firm, Mr. Meier handled a heavy caseload of complex cases, and for the last decade, he focused heavily on trial work, mostly defending clients with high-level felony charges. He specializes in civil and criminal litigation, and he is skilled at working with complex and challenging clients.
Mr. Meier said he is looking forward to training and mentoring court appointed attorneys and being a resource for private practitioners who might need assistance in running their practices more efficiently.
“I also want to work with the judges and DAs to try and address issues so that taking court appointed cases will be smoother on private assigned counsel … I am looking forward to a new chapter in my career and hope I can help move court appointed work forward and encourage more people to join court appointed rosters.”
Mr. Meier lives in Bahama, NC, with his wife, Leslie, their four cats (Sam, Little Kitty, Mr. Kitty and Scott) and one lone pup, Ernie. He and Leslie enjoy traveling and relaxing with the animals.
