
Congratulations are in order for J. Chad Perry. On May 1, 2026, the IDS Commission voted unanimously to reappoint him as Chief Special Counsel for North Carolina for a new four-year term.
IDS Commission Chair Bryan Jones said, “As Chair and on behalf of the IDS Commission, we congratulate Mr. Perry on his reappointment as Chief Special Counsel. His proven leadership, legal expertise and commitment to justice, service and compassion for those facing involuntary commitment give us full confidence in his continued success in this vital role.”
Prior to his first appointment as Chief Special Counsel four years ago, Mr. Perry served as an assistant public defender in Durham County for eight years. He previously served as a senior attorney advisor for the Office of the Inspector General for Washington, D.C. and as an attorney advisor for the Social Security Administration’s Appeals Council in Crystal City, Va.
Chief Perry said, “Leading this office has been a profound privilege. I have been continually inspired by the dedication of our attorneys and staff. Thank you to IDS Executive Director Pollard, IDS Commission Chair Jones and to the entire Commission for your continued trust and support. I look forward to everything we will accomplish together in the years ahead.”
