The Office of Indigent Defense Services is pleased to introduce Joshua Hummel as the new IDS Data Analyst. His first day was May 19, 2025.
IDS Research Director Christopher Sadler said, “Throughout his career, Joshua has engaged with a variety of opportunities that have allowed him to apply knowledge of social systems and unique methodological tools and strategies to address complex challenges in ways that matter for those in need.”
Joshua has a Ph.D. in sociology from N.C. State University, a master’s degree in linguistics from the University of Georgia, and a B.A. in sociology and cultural anthropology from Vanguard University of Southern California.
Most recently, Joshua was a graduate student and researcher, where he collaborated with research teams at NCSU and occasionally consulted for a small nonprofit.
Joshua is originally from Orange County in Southern California. His studies took him to Georgia in 2015 and then brought him to North Carolina in 2017. Outside work, he enjoys “a really good story—” which he accesses through a wide range of media. He dabbles in creative writing and specializes in learning.
Joshua said he is looking forward to “applying a mixture of data science principles and computer-based technologies to support projects that will help indigent defendants in North Carolina as well as the attorneys who represent them.”
