Collateral Consequences of Juvenile Adjudications and How to Limit Them with Expunctions

The Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office is hosting a FREE-to-attend presentation on “Collateral Consequences of Juvenile Adjudications and How to Limit Them with Expunctions.”

Pending approval by the NC State Bar, this presentation is for 1 general CLE hour.

When: October 4, 2024 at 12:30pm 

Where: Either anyplace you have internet or the 4th floor conference room of the Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office ( to left off elevator on 4th floor at 720 E 4th St Charlotte, NC). The conference room will open by 12:15pm

What: The speakers will discuss the collateral consequences of juvenile adjudications and why taking steps to expunge these adjudications are so important. They will next discuss the process to obtain expunctions of juvenile adjudications as well as certain criminal convictions obtained prior to Raise the Age.

Who:

Veronika Monteleone graduated from Carolina Law with honors in 2015. She began her legal career at the Council for Children’s Rights representing children in both civil commitment proceedings and juvenile delinquency matters. She became a board-certified specialist in Juvenile Delinquency Law in 2021 and is a certified Juvenile Training Immersion Program Trainer. She is currently an Assistant Public Defender with the Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office. Prior to her current role, she was an Assistant Public Defender and Juvenile Court Supervisor at the Gaston County Public Defender’s Office.

Courtney Viebrock manages the Pro Bono Program for the Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy. In this program, she engages Charlotte’s legal community in serving the Advocacy Center’s clients by partnering with firms, in-house attorneys at financial institutions and corporations, and community organizations. The Pro Bono Program supports each program by sending cases to pro bono attorneys and holding clinics using volunteer attorneys and legal professionals. Before joining the Advocacy Center in March 2023, Courtney began her legal career administering research and development of federal government contracts with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. After moving to Charlotte, she transitioned to criminal law, working for the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office for five years. As an Assistant District Attorney, she prosecuted misdemeanor and felony cases through all stages in district, juvenile, and superior court while gaining valuable bench and jury trial experience. Most recently, she worked as a civil litigator with a small firm managing a variety of matters including construction defect lawsuits, contract disputes, and summary ejectment actions for both plaintiffs and defendants.
