DESCRIPTION:FREE WEBINAR – June 29\, 2023\, 12:30 pm \n60 minutes of CLE credit offered \n  \n\n\nIntroduction to Adverse Childhood Experiences and Secondary Traumatic Stress: Childhood experiences impact overall development and functioning\, resulting in risk and protective factors. This presentation will focus on the impact of adverse childhood experiences and their impact on brain development and overall health risk factors. Attorneys will gain knowledge on the impact on client relationships and stressors with a focus on improving overall client/attorney relationships and outcomes. \nForensics 101: Litigating challenges related complex scientific evidence can be difficult and time-consuming for attorneys who are not scientists and are dealing with a multitude of other issues in their cases. This presentation will assist attorneys who are new to practicing in North Carolina with effectively evaluating and making challenges to unreliable scientific evidence. Attorneys will learn about how forensic evidence is tested in NC and some of the types of scientific evidence that are ripe for challenge. A discussion of lab discovery\, use of experts and other available resources\, and Rule of Evidence 702 will prepare attorneys to skillfully litigate admissibility of unreliable scientific evidence. \nThe webinar includes a visual presentation\, live audio\, and interactive Q & A. \nParticipants: This webinar is open to public defenders\, private attorneys who do indigent criminal defense work and their staff. \nRegistration:\nComplete this form to register and the program link will be sent in a separate email. \nSchedule: The webinar will be held on Friday\, June 29\, 2023\, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Please plan to sign on 15 minutes before the start of the webinar to test your connection. \nFee: There is no registration fee for participants. Those interested in earning 1 CLE will be billed by the State Bar for the cost of CLE at $3.50 per hour. To receive CLE credit\, all participants must pre-register individually. \nPresenters:\nCarla Huff\, Med\, MSW\, LCSW: Carla began her career in the United States Army and was trained in military intelligence and law enforcement. After leaving the military\, Carla worked as a juvenile court counselor for the Department of Juvenile Justice & Delinquency Prevention in Wake County. Carla also spent time working in Wake County Public Schools\, providing support for children and adolescents diagnosed with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI). She later transitioned to working with Alliance Health\, a local managed care organization. Here\, she covered multiple counties and was part of two pilot programs—one providing support to caregivers of children with complex health needs\, the other supporting community inclusion for individuals transitioning out of long-term care. \nCarla was previously involved with the Wake Juvenile Crime Prevention Council and served as part of the Executive Team for eight years. She was also a primary contributor to the NC Department of Public Safety’s Care Review Process due to Senate Bill 207 passage and implementation. \nSarah R. Olson\, JD: Sarah Olson has served as the IDS Forensic Resource Counsel since 2010. As Forensic Resource Counsel\, she assists public defenders and private appointed counsel with understanding and challenging\, where appropriate\, the scientific evidence in their cases. By specializing in scientific evidence\, Sarah is able to improve counsel’s ability to understand complex evidence and achieve better outcomes in their cases. She shares information through individual case consults\, her forensic website\, and continuing legal education programs. \nPrior to working as Forensic Resource Counsel\, Sarah was an Assistant Public Defender in Durham\, NC where she represented clients in Durham’s District and Superior Courts. After law school Sarah completed a fellowship with the Fair Trial Initiative where she worked as a part of defense teams representing clients in capital cases throughout North Carolina.
