Due to the program’s interactive nature\, participants must attend all sessions. \nFEE: The registration fee for private attorneys is $350. SUMMARY:2025 Defender Trial School
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Defender Trial School\, co-sponsored by the School of Government and the North Carolina Office of Indigent Defense Services\, will be held Monday\, July 7 through Friday\, July 11 at the UNC School of Government. \n  \nThe program will offer approximately 29.50 hours of CLE credit\, including one hour of Ethics credit\, and qualifies for NC State Bar criminal law specialization credit. \n  \nParticipants will use their own non-capital cases to develop a cohesive theory of defense at trial and apply that theory through all stages of a criminal trial\, including voir dire\, opening and closing arguments\, and direct and cross-examination. \n  \nPARTICIPANTS \nThe Defender Trial School is open to public defenders and\, space permitting\, private attorneys who perform a significant amount of appointed work. \n  \nBecause space is limited at the Trial School\, public defenders must receive approval from their Chief Public Defender prior to registering. You do not need to send us anything formal from your chief defender\, but please obtain approval before registering. \n  \nATTENDANCE \nUnlike other programs\, you need to attend all of the sessions. The sessions build on one another\, and by the end of the program\, you will have developed a comprehensive strategy for trying your case. \n  \nLOCATION\, DATES\, AND TIMES \nThe program will be held Monday\, July 7\, through Friday\, July 11\, at the School of Government on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. Check-in is on Monday from 8:00 am to 8:45 am\, and the program ends around 1:00 pm on Friday. He is the author of the book “Lethel State – A history of the Death Penalty in North Carolina” (2019). Kotch traces the death penalty from the Reconstruction Act of 1867 to the present. He walks us through hanging\, the electric chair\, the gas chamber\, and the gurney. He discusses the cases of Furman v. Georgia\, and Woodson v. NC. This is a history lesson we all need to hear. The program consists of a mix of lectures and intensive small-group workshops. DESCRIPTION:Registration is open for the 2023 North Carolina Appellate Advocacy Training\, cosponsored by the School of Government and the Office of Indigent Defense Services. \nPARTICIPANTS:\nThe Appellate Advocacy Training is open to assistant appellate defenders and attorneys on the appellate appointment list maintained by the Office of the Appellate Defender. SUMMARY:2023 Higher-Level Felony Defense Training
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that the 2023 Higher-Level Felony Defense Training\, cosponsored by the School of Government and the Office of Indigent Defense Services\, will take place on September 12-14\, 2023\, at the School of Government.  \nLINK TO AGENDA \nPARTICIPANTS: This program is for attorneys interested in handling higher-level felony cases at the trial level. Topics will include preparing for serious felony cases\, eyewitness identifications\, habitual felons\, self-defense\, client relations and rapport\, sentencing law and advocacy\, and mitigation investigation. The program consists of a mix of lectures and intensive small-group workshops. Due to the program’s interactive nature\, participants must attend all sessions. \nAGENDA AND REGISTRATION: The agenda is posted on the course page linked below. The course registration deadline is Wednesday\, August 30\, at 5:00pm\, but seats may fill quickly\, and capacity is limited\, so do not wait to apply! \nThe Office of Indigent Defense Services has agreed to fund registration for all participants\, including contract attorneys and private assigned counsel (although they remain responsible for the cost of their travel\, lodging\, and meals other than lunches and snacks provided during the training). \nDue to the expected level of interest\, the intensive nature of the training\, and limits on seating capacity\, the program is capped at a total of 36 participants. You must take the following steps BEFORE you can register. \n\nIf you are in a public defender’s office\, you must obtain the approval of your Chief Public Defender to register. Because of limited space\, each office is allotted one slot.\nIf you are a contract attorney or private assigned counsel\, you must currently represent appointed felony clients to register.\n\nCLE COURSE CREDIT: We have applied for 12.25 hours of CLE credit (including 1.0 hours of ethics credit). SUMMARY:2023 Defender Trial School
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce that the 2023 Defender Trial School\, cosponsored by the School of Government and the North Carolina Office of Indigent Defense Services\, will be held Monday\, July 10 through Friday\, July 14 at the School of Government. The program will offer approximately 28 hours of general CLE credit and qualifies for NC State Bar criminal law specialization credit. \nParticipants will use their own cases to develop a cohesive theory of defense at trial and apply that theory through all stages of a trial\, including voir dire\, opening and closing arguments\, and direct and cross-examination. \nWe are also excited to let you know that IDS has expanded the number of fellowships (scholarships) available to attend the Trial School. Please review the information below before registering\, including the registration deadlines\, and the instructions about obtaining a fellowship. \nPARTICIPANTS \nThe Defender Trial School is open to public defenders and\, space permitting\, private attorneys who perform a significant amount of appointed work. \nBecause space is limited at the Trial School\, public defenders must receive approval from their Chief Public Defenders prior to registering. You do not need to send us anything formal from your chief defender\, but please obtain approval before registering. \nATTENDANCE \nUnlike other programs\, you need to attend all of the sessions. The sessions build on one another\, and by the end of the program\, you will have developed a comprehensive strategy for trying your case. \nLOCATION\, DATES\, AND TIMES \nThe program will be held Monday\, July 10\, through Friday\, July 14\, at the School of Government on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus.
