He has handled some of the most complex\, challenging and high profile cases in North Carolina and is recognized as one of the premier civil\, “white collar” criminal\, and healthcare litigators. He has represented numerous companies and individuals in complex and significant business disputes\, governmental investigations\, grand jury matters\, internal investigations and “bet-your-company” cases for more than 30 years. He has tried more than 60 civil and criminal cases to verdict and argued nearly 50 appeals in the appellate courts of North Carolina and in the federal courts of appeal\, including the Second and Fourth Circuits. \nJim is a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and a Permanent Member of the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference. He is consistently ranked by Chambers USA in Band 1 in North Carolina for Litigation: General Commercial and Litigation: White-Collar Crime & Government Investigations\, where he was recently praised by sources as an “excellent lawyer.” He is also included in The Best Lawyers in America in the fields of “Bet-the-Company” Litigation\, Commercial Litigation\, and Criminal Defense White Collar Litigation. Participants will examine how past experiences influence present reactions\, the emotional toll of isolation\, and how consistent daily wellness practices can strengthen resilience. The session emphasizes the power of choice and recognizes decision fatigue as a modern source of stress. By the end of this training\, attendees will understand how intentional choices and gratitude can positively shift both mindset and physiological stress levels. \nParticipants: This webinar is open to public defenders\, private attorneys who do indigent criminal defense work\, and staff. \nPresenter: Carla Huff\, MEd\, MSW\, LCSW: Carla began her career in the United States Army and has also worked as a Juvenile Court Counselor and Special Education Teacher providing support for children and adolescents diagnosed with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI). She later transitioned to working at Alliance Health\, a local managed care organization. Here\, she covered multiple counties and led two pilot programs—one providing support to caregivers of children with complex health needs\, the other supporting community inclusion for individuals transitioning out of long-term care\, housing\, and incarceration. \nCarla currently works at Indigent Defense Services\, employed through an NC IOLTA Grant. In this role\, she is responsible for attorney recruitment and providing trauma-informed training to staff and contractors. Carla is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has an interest in the impact of trauma\, post-traumatic stress injury in civilians and military personnel\, and social determinants/drivers of health. DESCRIPTION:The Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office and the Federal Defender for the Western District of North Carolina are hosting a FREE-to-attend Mitigation for the Non-Capital Client Series\, either in person at the Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office or through Webex. \nEach session is 90 minutes (from 12:30-2pm) and is approved for 1.5 hours of other CLE credit.  If you need CLE credit\, you must sign in if attending in person or if attending online\, you either need to complete the post-CLE survey or email me your name\, NC State Bar # and how long you attended by the Wednesday after the presentation. \n  \nThe series will offer tips and suggestions to answer the below questions: \n\n\n\n\n\nHow did our client get in this position with the charges they are facing?
