Please register by Friday\, August 8. \n  \nPROGRAM OVERVIEW\, DATES\, AND LOCATION: The Juvenile Defender Conference will be held at the School of Government on Wednesday\, August 20. Topics will include legislative and case law updates to juvenile law\, remediation\, capacity considerations\, navigating uncomfortable situations and complex cases as a defender\, and a look at A.I. (artificial intelligence) and what it means for juvenile proceedings and defense counsel. \nThe Parent Attorney Conference will be held at the School of Government on Thursday\, August 21. Topics will include legislative and case law updates (including strategies and tips for defenders)\, the role of Rule 17 guardians ad litem for parents\, and tips for working with challenging clients. \nThe agendas will be posted soon. \n  \nFEE: The registration fee for private assigned and managed assigned counsel is $215 for the Juvenile Defender Conference and $215 for the Parent Attorney Conference. There is no fee for IDS state employees. \nSCHOLARSHIPS: A limited number of scholarships are available for private assigned and managed assigned counsel. If you are interested in applying\, complete the scholarship application as soon as possible. If you receive a scholarship\, the registration fee is waived. The scholarship deadline is 5:00 pm on Friday\, August 1. We’ll explore the signs and symptoms of trauma exposure\, including secondary trauma\, and how these experiences impact the autonomic nervous system. The session also offers practical strategies that emphasize both individual accountability and organizational responsibility in supporting health and well-being. Finally\, we’ll have an honest conversation about recognizing when the demands of this work may be taking too great a toll on your life-and what to do next. \nParticipants: This webinar is open to public defenders\, private attorneys who do indigent criminal defense work\, and staff. \nAbout Presenter Carla Huff\, MEd\, MSW\, LCSW \nCarla began her career in the United States Army and has also worked as a Juvenile Court Counselor\, Special Education Teacher providing support for children and adolescents diagnosed with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI). She later transitioned to working at Alliance Health\, a local managed care organization. Here\, she covered multiple counties and led two pilot programs—one providing support to caregivers of children with complex health needs\, the other supporting community inclusion for individuals transitioning out of long-term care\, housing\, and incarceration. \nCarla currently works at Indigent Defense Services\, employed through an NC IOLTA Grant. In this role\, she is responsible for attorney recruitment and providing trauma-informed training to staff and contractors. Carla is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has an interest in the impact of trauma\, post-traumatic stress injury in civilians and military personnel\, and social determinants/drivers of health. SUMMARY:Mitigation for the Noncapital Client - A Series!
DESCRIPTION:The Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office and the Federal Defender for the Western District of North Carolina are hosting a FREE-to-attend Mitigation for the Non-Capital Client Series\, either in person at the Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office or through Webex. \nEach session is 90 minutes (from 12:30-2pm) and is approved for 1.5 hours of other CLE credit.  If you need CLE credit\, you must sign in if attending in person or if attending online\, you either need to complete the post-CLE survey or email me your name\, NC State Bar # and how long you attended by the Wednesday after the presentation. \n  \nThe series will offer tips and suggestions to answer the below questions: \n\n\n\n\n\nHow did our client get in this position with the charges they are facing? (Sessions 1 and 2)\nCan science\, through an expert or experts\, help explain how our client got into this position and is there is a treatment plan available?
