SUMMARY:2025 Defender Trial School
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Defender Trial School\, co-sponsored by the School of Government and the North Carolina Office of Indigent Defense Services\, will be held Monday\, July 7 through Friday\, July 11 at the UNC School of Government. \n  \nThe program will offer approximately 29.50 hours of CLE credit\, including one hour of Ethics credit\, and qualifies for NC State Bar criminal law specialization credit. \n  \nParticipants will use their own non-capital cases to develop a cohesive theory of defense at trial and apply that theory through all stages of a criminal trial\, including voir dire\, opening and closing arguments\, and direct and cross-examination. \n  \nPARTICIPANTS \nThe Defender Trial School is open to public defenders and\, space permitting\, private attorneys who perform a significant amount of appointed work. \n  \nBecause space is limited at the Trial School\, public defenders must receive approval from their Chief Public Defender prior to registering. You do not need to send us anything formal from your chief defender\, but please obtain approval before registering. \n  \nATTENDANCE \nUnlike other programs\, you need to attend all of the sessions. The sessions build on one another\, and by the end of the program\, you will have developed a comprehensive strategy for trying your case. \n  \nLOCATION\, DATES\, AND TIMES \nThe program will be held Monday\, July 7\, through Friday\, July 11\, at the School of Government on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. Check-in is on Monday from 8:00 am to 8:45 am\, and the program ends around 1:00 pm on Friday. Lunch is available in the building on Monday through Thursday. \nThe agenda is available on the course page. \n  \nREGISTRATION \nThere is no registration fee for IDS employees. If you are interested in attending\, register as soon as possible. Although the registration deadline is 5:00 pm on Wednesday\, June 18\, registration for eligible persons is on a first-come\, first-served basis\, and all spots may be taken before the deadline. \n  \nTo register online\, as well as to find directions and other program information\, visit https://www.sog.unc.edu/courses/defender-trial-school. After you register\, stay on the lookout for two emails: the first will confirm that you signed up\, and the second will confirm that your registration is accepted. \n  \nNote that the registration system requires one unique email address per profile created\, so each person from your office who plans to attend must register separately using an individual email address. Since we correspond with participants primarily through email\, ensure your email address is current. \n  \nSCHOLARSHIPS \nA limited number of scholarships are available for private assigned and managed assigned counsel. If you are interested in applying\, click here to complete the scholarship application. If you receive a scholarship\, the registration fee of $850 is waived. You are responsible for your own travel\, food\, and lodging expenses. Scholarships are awarded no later than two weeks after application submission. Please apply as soon as possible. The scholarship deadline is Wednesday\, June 11.  \n  \nBRING YOUR OWN CASE \nThis program differs from others that you may have attended. Although you will be working from a hypothetical case in the plenary sessions\, you will spend most of your time in small groups working on your own cases. Included in the training are numerous tips about detecting this often-overlooked neurodevelopment condition\, which according to DSM-5-TR is as severe as intellectual disability but more challenging to identify and understand because it often is concealed behind an average to low-average IQ. Presented by a forensic psychologist with many years of experience evaluating and testifying about FASD in capital murder cases as well as other felonies\, you will learn what FASD is\, how to spot possible FASD in your clients\, why it is as severe as intellectual disability\, and what forensic experts you will need in various legal contexts. \nParticipants: This webinar is open to public defenders\, private attorneys who do indigent criminal defense work\, and staff. \nPresenter: Natalie Novick Brown is a licensed clinical and forensic psychologist in Washington State (also licensed in Florida and Alaska). Dr. Brown’s doctoral training includes a PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Washington\, which was followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in FASD with pioneer FASD researcher Dr. Ann Streissguth\, which led to certification as a private psychological expert for the Developmental Disabilities Administration in Washington State. Dr. Brown’s formal forensic training consists of an 18-month predoctoral internship in parenting evaluation plus a year of supervised postdoctoral training in sex offender evaluation and treatment\, the latter of which led to certification as a Sex Offender Treatment Provider (SOTP). In the course of her 25-year private practice\, Dr. Brown has specialized in parenting\, sexual offender\, and child sexual abuse evaluations\, as well as treating and evaluating individuals with FASD and comorbid neurodevelopmental disorders. The latter has included FASD evaluations in capital murder cases across the United States. As a clinical assistant professor (courtesy staff) at the University of Washington’s School of Medicine\, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine\, Dr. Brown consults and participates in treatment and intervention research at the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute. Dr. Brown has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on FASD and presented on the subject at many states\, national\, and international conferences. In 2007\, she and colleagues founded FASDExperts\, a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals who conducted forensic FASD assessments in capital and other felony contexts. In 2012\, she was invited to contribute to the American Bar Association’s 2012 Resolution on FASD. In 2021\, her book Evaluating Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders in the Forensic Context was published. DESCRIPTION:The Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office and the Federal Defender for the Western District of North Carolina are hosting a FREE-to-attend Mitigation for the Non-Capital Client Series\, either in person at the Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office or through Webex. \nEach session is 90 minutes (from 12:30-2pm) and is approved for 1.5 hours of other CLE credit.  If you need CLE credit\, you must sign in if attending in person or if attending online\, you either need to complete the post-CLE survey or email me your name\, NC State Bar # and how long you attended by the Wednesday after the presentation. \n  \nThe series will offer tips and suggestions to answer the below questions: \n\n\n\n\n\nHow did our client get in this position with the charges they are facing?
