DESCRIPTION:Registration for the Summer Criminal Law Webinar is now open. Thanks to the support of the Office of Indigent Defense Services and the UNC School of Government\, we are pleased to announce that there is no registration fee for indigent defenders who meet the eligibility criteria described below. \nThe 2025 Summer Criminal Law Webinar will cover recent criminal law decisions issued by the North Carolina appellate courts and highlight significant criminal law legislation enacted by the North Carolina General Assembly. School of Government faculty Phil Dixon and Daniel Spiegel will discuss a wide range of issues affecting felony and misdemeanor cases in the North Carolina state courts. The webinar includes a visual presentation\, live audio\, and interactive Q & A. \nCLE: 60 minutes of General CLE Credit is pending. \nIndividual Course Sign Up: here \nSeries Sign Up: here \nFee: There is no registration fee for participants. \nDescription: This presentation will cover the tenets of trauma-informed interviewing and will provide the audience with an introduction to the neurobiology of trauma and trauma’s impact on memory. \nTrauma-informed interviewing is both: an understanding of how memory is limited and changed by a traumatic experience\, and an effort to address the ways in which the interview itself can be re-traumatizing.  This presentation will discuss how to incorporate transparency\, trust\, and choice to limit possible re-traumatization and how to protect the emotional and mental wellbeing of the interviewer. \nParticipants: This webinar is open to public defenders\, private attorneys who do indigent criminal defense work\, and their staff. \nPresenter:  Emma Paul is the Victim Services Program Manager for the Innocence Inquiry Commission.  Emma provides direct support and advocacy to victims of crime\, develops and implements trauma-informed policies and practices\, and consults with investigators on best approaches to engaging with victims. \nPrior to joining the Innocence Inquiry Commission Staff in February 2020\, Emma worked as a Project Assistant at the National Center for Child Traumatic Stress. During her time at the National Center for Child Traumatic Stress\, Emma served the researchers\, child psychiatrists\, and community providers working to raise the standard of care and improve access to services for traumatized children\, their families and communities throughout the United States. SUMMARY:Mitigation for the Noncapital Client - A Series!
DESCRIPTION:The Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office and the Federal Defender for the Western District of North Carolina are hosting a FREE-to-attend Mitigation for the Non-Capital Client Series\, either in person at the Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office or through Webex. \nEach session is 90 minutes (from 12:30-2pm) and is approved for 1.5 hours of other CLE credit.  If you need CLE credit\, you must sign in if attending in person or if attending online\, you either need to complete the post-CLE survey or email me your name\, NC State Bar # and how long you attended by the Wednesday after the presentation. \n  \nThe series will offer tips and suggestions to answer the below questions: \n\n\n\n\n\nHow did our client get in this position with the charges they are facing? (Sessions 1 and 2)\nCan science\, through an expert or experts\, help explain how our client got into this position and is there is a treatment plan available? (Session 3)\nWhat can be done to prevent this from happening again by developing a probation\, prison and/or reentry plan and who will hold client accountable to this plan? Topics will include relevant considerations when a party wishes to call a child witness (including subpoenas\, motions in limine\, availability\, and competency)\, and admissibility concerns when a party offers a child’s out-of-court statements (including those made on social media\, and to parties or third-party professionals) into evidence.
