The same information will be presented at each location\, so you only need to attend one.  \n  \nAbout: \nThis presentation will provide an overview on probabilistic genotyping (PG) software\, now being used to interpret complex DNA mixtures at the State Crime Lab and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department Lab.  Attendees will learn more about the functionality of the PG software (STRmix) and become familiar with report structure and conclusions. \n  \nThe objective of the presentation is to gain a better understanding of how the software is implemented and used to interpret complex DNA mixtures.  Attendees will become more informed about what to expect from the lab (reports\, underlying result\, software output files)\, the limitations of the software\, and venues for challenging PG results in defense of their criminal clients. \n  \nRegistration: \nAttorneys\, investigators\, paralegals\, legal assistants\, and other members of criminal defense teams can register for this webinar using this link. The program is free to attend. \n  \nPresenter: \nDr. Maher “Max” Noureddine\, PhD. is molecular geneticist with extensive background in scientific research in human genetics and expertise in Forensic DNA evidence. He earned his Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Duke University Medical Center (The Center for Human Genetics)\, where he published many articles on the genetics of Parkinson Disease and other human genetic disorders.  His expertise includes specialized training in complex genomics\, DNA fingerprinting\, mitochondrial genome analysis\, Single Nucleotide Polymorphism studies\, and state of the art methodologies in gene structure and function studies. Since 2011\, Dr. Noureddine has been providing expert witness services in forensic DNA and serology evidence throughout the United States.  He has served as an expert in over 1\,100 criminal and civil cases and testified in both State and Federal courts.  He is a diplomat of the American Board of Criminalistics\, and a member of the International Society of Forensic Genetics\, the American Academy of Forensic Sciences\, the American Society of Human Genetics\, and the International Association for Identification.  He is an adjunct teaching faculty in the Department of Forensic Science at Radford University\, VA. \n  \nAdditional dates:\nMar 31 – Mecklenburg County Courthouse\, 12:30-2:30 p.m.\nApr 24 – Brunswick County Courthouse\, 12:30-2:30 p.m.

She later transitioned to working at Alliance Health\, a local managed care organization. Here\, she covered multiple counties and led two pilot programs—one providing support to caregivers of children with complex health needs\, the other supporting community inclusion for individuals transitioning out of long-term care\, housing\, and incarceration. \nCarla currently works at Indigent Defense Services\, employed through an NC IOLTA Grant. In this role\, she is responsible for attorney recruitment and providing trauma-informed training to staff and contractors. Carla is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has an interest in the impact of trauma\, post-traumatic stress injury in civilians and military personnel\, and social determinants/drivers of health. By the end of this training\, attendees will understand how intentional choices and gratitude can positively shift both mindset and physiological stress levels. \nParticipants: This webinar is open to public defenders\, private attorneys who do indigent criminal defense work\, and staff. \nPresenter: Carla Huff\, MEd\, MSW\, LCSW: Carla began her career in the United States Army and has also worked as a Juvenile Court Counselor and Special Education Teacher providing support for children and adolescents diagnosed with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI). She later transitioned to working at Alliance Health\, a local managed care organization. Here\, she covered multiple counties and led two pilot programs—one providing support to caregivers of children with complex health needs\, the other supporting community inclusion for individuals transitioning out of long-term care\, housing\, and incarceration. \nCarla currently works at Indigent Defense Services\, employed through an NC IOLTA Grant. In this role\, she is responsible for attorney recruitment and providing trauma-informed training to staff and contractors. Carla is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has an interest in the impact of trauma\, post-traumatic stress injury in civilians and military personnel\, and social determinants/drivers of health. He has handled some of the most complex\, challenging and high profile cases in North Carolina and is recognized as one of the premier civil\, “white collar” criminal\, and healthcare litigators. The webinar includes a visual presentation\, live audio\, and interactive Q & A. \nCourse Sign Up: here \nFee: There is no registration fee for participants. \nDescription: This 1-hour training covers the basics of recognizing and managing the impact of suicide\, trauma and building best practices to recognize the signs of suicide and how to develop a meaningful conversation.  Participants will be able to learn how to become more suicide aware and discuss how suicide develops from stress\, life events\, trauma and other risk factors. Becoming more suicide aware will be discussed as well as why we may miss\, dismiss and avoid the conversation about suicide. \nAttendees will learn how to be more confident\, take action to talk about suicide and resources available if they find themselves in a position to identify suicide risk. \nParticipants: This webinar is open to public defenders\, private attorneys who do indigent criminal defense work\, and staff. \nDr. Mike Crum: Mike Crum is a former Marine with a Bachelor’s\, Master’s and Doctorate in Social Work. For the last 10 years Mike has worked in Suicide Prevention at a community and macro level educating about the needs of service members and veterans. Mikes work within the Army National Guard has led to training thousands of Soldiers in Resilience and Suicide Prevention Education. Mike currently works to address protective and risk factors for the Army National Guard and informs leadership how to curb trends on topics like suicide\, domestic violence\, sexual assault and abuse and neglect. For the past 10 years Mike has worked in the world of Suicide Prevention\, training\, education\, and working to make more suicide safer communities. \nMike currently lives in Florida with his wife who works for the Public Health Department in Maternity/Infant Healthcare. They have two cats\, Mr. Twiggers and Mr. Milo. They both love sunshine and the beach!
