The same information will be presented at each location\, so you only need to attend one.  \n  \nAbout: \nThis presentation will provide an overview on probabilistic genotyping (PG) software\, now being used to interpret complex DNA mixtures at the State Crime Lab and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department Lab.  Attendees will learn more about the functionality of the PG software (STRmix) and become familiar with report structure and conclusions. \n  \nThe objective of the presentation is to gain a better understanding of how the software is implemented and used to interpret complex DNA mixtures.  Attendees will become more informed about what to expect from the lab (reports\, underlying result\, software output files)\, the limitations of the software\, and venues for challenging PG results in defense of their criminal clients. \n  \nRegistration: \nAttorneys\, investigators\, paralegals\, legal assistants\, and other members of criminal defense teams can register for this webinar using this link. The program is free to attend. \n  \nPresenter: \nDr. Maher “Max” Noureddine\, PhD. is molecular geneticist with extensive background in scientific research in human genetics and expertise in Forensic DNA evidence. He earned his Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Duke University Medical Center (The Center for Human Genetics)\, where he published many articles on the genetics of Parkinson Disease and other human genetic disorders.  His expertise includes specialized training in complex genomics\, DNA fingerprinting\, mitochondrial genome analysis\, Single Nucleotide Polymorphism studies\, and state of the art methodologies in gene structure and function studies. Since 2011\, Dr. Noureddine has been providing expert witness services in forensic DNA and serology evidence throughout the United States.  He has served as an expert in over 1\,100 criminal and civil cases and testified in both State and Federal courts.  He is a diplomat of the American Board of Criminalistics\, and a member of the International Society of Forensic Genetics\, the American Academy of Forensic Sciences\, the American Society of Human Genetics\, and the International Association for Identification.  He is an adjunct teaching faculty in the Department of Forensic Science at Radford University\, VA. \n  \nAdditional dates:\nMar 31 – Mecklenburg County Courthouse\, 12:30-2:30 p.m.\nApr 24 – Brunswick County Courthouse\, 12:30-2:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Defending Sexual Assault Cases Training
DESCRIPTION:The Defending Sexual Assault Cases Training\, co-sponsored by the UNC School of Government and the Office of Indigent Defense Services\, is now open. \n  \nPROGRAM OVERVIEW\, DATES\, AND LOCATION: The program will be held at the UNC School of Government on Thursday\, April 16\, through Friday\, April 17. Topics will include pretrial investigation\, motions practice\, theme and theory\, common legal issues\, forensic interviews of children\, SANE exams\, challenging experts and working with experts\, SBM\, registry\, sentencing\, consent\, and psychosexual evaluation. The program is comprised of plenary sessions and a workshop where participants will be guided by experienced practitioners as they consider approaches in a sample case. \n  \nYou can access the agenda here. \n  \nFEE: The registration fee for private assigned and managed assigned counsel\, capital attorneys\, private attorneys\, and others is $350. There is no fee for IDS state employees. \n  \nREGISTRATION: Register here for the Defending Sexual Assault Cases Training. The registration deadline is 5:00 pm on Friday\, April 3. \n  \nCLE CREDIT: This program will offer up to 12 hours of continuing legal education credit (pending State Bar approval). \n  \nHOTEL INFORMATION: A block of rooms is available at Hampton Inn & Suites Carrboro (370 E Main St Carrboro\, NC) with a rate of $140 plus taxes and fees valid for April 15-17. The hotel reservation deadline is Tuesday\, March 24. DESCRIPTION:The North Carolina Advocates for Justice and Indigent Defense Services present the Death Penalty 2026 Seminar in Chapel Hill April 23-24\, 2026.\nThe registration link and hotel reservation link are below. \nSPECIAL NOTE TO STATE EMPLOYEES is at the bottom of the email. State employees must get supervisor approval to IDS in order to seek reimbursement. \nThursday night\, April 23\, there will be a social hour\, a banquet\, and a presentation that covers one hour Wellness CLE. There is a separate fee for Thursday night of $85.00. Attendance Thursday night is optional. SUMMARY:Probabilistic Genotyping: Interpreting Complex DNA Mixtures with STRmix
DESCRIPTION:FREE CLE\nProbabilistic Genotyping:\nInterpreting Complex DNA Mixtures with STRmix\nPresented by Dr. Max Noureddine \nFeb. 25\, 2026\, 12:30-2:30 p.m. \nJohnston County Courthouse – in person only \n2 hours of CLE credit anticipated \n  \n  \nThis program will take place in 3 locations in Western\, Central\, and Eastern North Carolina. *Additional dates and locations are at the bottom of this post. The same information will be presented at each location\, so you only need to attend one.  \n  \nAbout: \nThis presentation will provide an overview on probabilistic genotyping (PG) software\, now being used to interpret complex DNA mixtures at the State Crime Lab and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department Lab.  Attendees will learn more about the functionality of the PG software (STRmix) and become familiar with report structure and conclusions. \n  \nThe objective of the presentation is to gain a better understanding of how the software is implemented and used to interpret complex DNA mixtures.  Attendees will become more informed about what to expect from the lab (reports\, underlying result\, software output files)\, the limitations of the software\, and venues for challenging PG results in defense of their criminal clients. \n  \nRegistration: \nAttorneys\, investigators\, paralegals\, legal assistants\, and other members of criminal defense teams can register for this webinar using this link. The program is free to attend. \n  \nPresenter: \nDr. Maher “Max” Noureddine\, PhD. is molecular geneticist with extensive background in scientific research in human genetics and expertise in Forensic DNA evidence. He earned his Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Duke University Medical Center (The Center for Human Genetics)\, where he published many articles on the genetics of Parkinson Disease and other human genetic disorders.  His expertise includes specialized training in complex genomics\, DNA fingerprinting\, mitochondrial genome analysis\, Single Nucleotide Polymorphism studies\, and state of the art methodologies in gene structure and function studies. Since 2011\, Dr. Noureddine has been providing expert witness services in forensic DNA and serology evidence throughout the United States.  He has served as an expert in over 1\,100 criminal and civil cases and testified in both State and Federal courts.  He is a diplomat of the American Board of Criminalistics\, and a member of the International Society of Forensic Genetics\, the American Academy of Forensic Sciences\, the American Society of Human Genetics\, and the International Association for Identification.  He is an adjunct teaching faculty in the Department of Forensic Science at Radford University\, VA. \n  \nAdditional dates:\nMar 31 – Mecklenburg County Courthouse\, 12:30-2:30 p.m.\nApr 24 – Brunswick County Courthouse\, 12:30-2:30 p.m.
