SUMMARY:2025 Higher-Level Felony Defense Training
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Higher-Level Felony Defense Training\, co-sponsored by the UNC School of Government and the Office of Indigent Defense Services\, is now open. \nPROGRAM OVERVIEW\, DATES\, AND LOCATION: The Higher-Level Felony Defense Training will be held at the School of Government on Tuesday\, September 9 – Thursday\, September 11. Topics will include preparing for serious felony cases\, eyewitness identifications\, habitual felons\, self-defense\, client relations and rapport\, sentencing law and advocacy\, and mitigation investigation. The program consists of a mix of lectures and intensive small-group workshops. Due to the program’s interactive nature\, participants must attend all sessions. \nFEE: The registration fee for private attorneys is $350. There is no fee for IDS state employees and private assigned and managed assigned counsel. \nREGISTRATION: Register here for the Higher-Level Felony Defense Training. The registration deadline is 5:00 pm on Friday\, August 22.  \n Due to the expected level of interest\, the intensive nature of the training\, and limits on seating capacity\, the program is capped at a total of 40 participants. You must take the following steps BEFORE you can register. \n If you are in a public defender’s office\, you must obtain the approval of your Chief Public Defender to register. Because of limited space\, each office is allotted one slot. \n\nIf you are a private assigned and managed assigned counsel\, you must currently represent appointed felony clients to register.\n\nCLE CREDIT: This program will offer up to 12.50 hours of continuing legal education credit\, including 1 hour of ethics credit (pending State Bar approval). \nHOTEL INFORMATION: A block of rooms is available at the Tru by Hilton Chapel Hill (1742 Fordham Blvd\, Chapel Hill\, NC) for $129 plus taxes and fees. The hotel reservation deadline is Saturday\, August 9. The webinar includes a visual presentation\, live audio\, and interactive Q & A. \nCourse Sign Up: here \nFee: There is no registration fee for participants. \nDescription: This 1-hour training covers the basics of recognizing and managing the impact of suicide\, trauma and building best practices to recognize the signs of suicide and how to develop a meaningful conversation.  Participants will be able to learn how to become more suicide aware and discuss how suicide develops from stress\, life events\, trauma and other risk factors. Becoming more suicide aware will be discussed as well as why we may miss\, dismiss and avoid the conversation about suicide. \nAttendees will learn how to be more confident\, take action to talk about suicide and resources available if they find themselves in a position to identify suicide risk. \nParticipants: This webinar is open to public defenders\, private attorneys who do indigent criminal defense work\, and staff. \nDr. Mike Crum: Mike Crum is a former Marine with a Bachelor’s\, Master’s and Doctorate in Social Work. For the last 10 years Mike has worked in Suicide Prevention at a community and macro level educating about the needs of service members and veterans. Mikes work within the Army National Guard has led to training thousands of Soldiers in Resilience and Suicide Prevention Education. Mike currently works to address protective and risk factors for the Army National Guard and informs leadership how to curb trends on topics like suicide\, domestic violence\, sexual assault and abuse and neglect. For the past 10 years Mike has worked in the world of Suicide Prevention\, training\, education\, and working to make more suicide safer communities. \nMike currently lives in Florida with his wife who works for the Public Health Department in Maternity/Infant Healthcare. They have two cats\, Mr. Twiggers and Mr. Milo. They both love sunshine and the beach!

SUMMARY:Mitigation for the Noncapital Client - A Series!
DESCRIPTION:The Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office and the Federal Defender for the Western District of North Carolina are hosting a FREE-to-attend Mitigation for the Non-Capital Client Series\, either in person at the Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office or through Webex. \nEach session is 90 minutes (from 12:30-2pm) and is approved for 1.5 hours of other CLE credit.  If you need CLE credit\, you must sign in if attending in person or if attending online\, you either need to complete the post-CLE survey or email me your name\, NC State Bar # and how long you attended by the Wednesday after the presentation. \n  \nThe series will offer tips and suggestions to answer the below questions: \n\n\n\n\n\nHow did our client get in this position with the charges they are facing? (Sessions 1 and 2)\nCan science\, through an expert or experts\, help explain how our client got into this position and is there is a treatment plan available? (Session 3)\nWhat can be done to prevent this from happening again by developing a probation\, prison and/or reentry plan and who will hold client accountable to this plan?
