SUMMARY:2024 Felony Defender Training
DESCRIPTION:Registration for the Felony Defender Training\, scheduled for February 7-9\, 2024\, is now open and available at https://www.sog.unc.edu/courses/felony-defender-training. This training is co-sponsored by the UNC School of Government and the Office of Indigent Defense Services. The agenda will be posted on the course webpage shortly. \nProgram: The program will be held at the School of Government with topics covering discovery and investigation\, suppression and other superior court motions\, lab reports\, preserving the record\, jury instructions\, sentencing\, and trial skills—including conducting voir dire—necessary to handle felony cases from start to finish. The program is comprised of plenary sessions and intensive small group workshops. \nParticipants: This training is open to public defenders and private attorneys who perform a significant amount of appointed work. The program is geared toward attorneys who are new to representing defendants charged with felonies in superior court. \nREGISTRATION: To register and find other program information\, visit https://www.sog.unc.edu/courses/felony-defender-training. The registration deadline is 5:00 p.m. on Friday\, January 26. Please plan on attending all sessions. \nFEE: The registration fee for private assigned counsel and contract attorneys is $450\, which includes all materials\, parking\, breaks\, and lunches. There is no fee for IDS state employees. \nA limited number of scholarships are available for private assigned counsel and contract attorneys. If you are interested in applying\, click here to complete the scholarship application. Scholarships are awarded no later than two weeks after application submission. Please apply as soon as possible. DESCRIPTION:Registration for the Current Developments in Criminal Law webinar is now open. Thanks to the support of the Office of Indigent Defense Services and the UNC School of Government\, we are pleased to announce that there is no registration fee for indigent defenders who meet the eligibility criteria described below. \nSchool of Government faculty Phil Dixon\, Jr. and Danny Spiegel will discuss state and federal appellate court decisions and other recent criminal law developments. \nParticipants: This webinar is open to public defenders\, private attorneys who do indigent criminal defense work\, and any others who are interested in criminal law. \nSchedule: The webinar will be held on Friday\, February 23\, 2024\, from 1:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Please plan to sign on 15 minutes before the start of the webinar to test your connection. \nRegistration: Visit https://www.sog.unc.edu/courses/criminal-law-webinars-case-and-legislative-updates to register online and find additional information about the webinar. Pre-registration is required. The deadline is Tuesday\, February 20\, 2024\, at 5:00 p.m.  \n Fee: There is no registration fee for IDS state employees. Private assigned counsel\, managed assigned counsel\, and capital attorneys who are eligible to register without charge will be billed by the State Bar for the cost of CLE at $3.50 per hour. SUMMARY:FREE WEBINAR: How to be inclusive and welcoming to persons with disabilities in the legal system
DESCRIPTION:In the United States\, disabled individuals are over-represented as both victims of crime and as those accused of crimes compared with their non-disabled counterparts. This overrepresentation is even higher for those with disabilities and other marginalized identities.
